Water Repellent Additive for Acrylics

LK-AQUA EM 293 amino functional siloxane emulsion additive is specially engineered for use in acrylic emulsion paints and primers. It provides excellent compatibility with all types of emulsion systems, ensuring smooth incorporation without destabilizing the formulation. Engineered to deliver exceptional water resistance, it forms a highly stable, durable, and breathable silicone network within the film. The advanced hydrophobic structure not only repels water effectively but also remains permeable to water vapor, reducing water penetration and minimizing risks of cracking, blistering, and film degradation. Even at low dosages, the additive significantly enhances water-beading performance, as demonstrated by substantially higher water drop contact angles in acrylic formulations. In addition to paints and primers, it can be applied as an overcoat to strengthen the water-repellent properties of natural stones, plasters, reinforced concrete, and substrates with minor porosity.

Comparison of the Contact Angle Between Control and LK-Aqua EM 293 (3%) added to acrylic paint

Applications:

I. Water resistance additive for emulsion paint and primer

  1. LK-AQUA EM 293 may be added undiluted during or after the manufacture of aqueous acrylic coatings and primers.
  2. The addition of LK-AQUA EM 293 in acrylic emulsion paint increases water drop contact angle, resulting in better water beading and hydrophobicity.
  3. Recommended addition levels: 3 to 5 wt% in acrylics and 1% in primer.
  4. Suitable for: Silicone emulsion paint, High to Low PVC paints, Silicate emulsion paint, Water-based primer.

II. Water repellent overcoat applications

  1. Use exclusively on porous and semi-porous substrates.
  2. When used as a water-repellent primer, dilute with water in a 1:10 ratio (by weight).
  3. Two successive coats are recommended to achieve optimum performance.
